Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed toured a new Chinese-Ethiopian joint venture on Sunday that will be able to produce up to 10 million COVID-19 test kits per year. The new test kits will be used to help mitigate the spread of the virus domestically and will also be made available to other African countries who have struggled to build robust testing regimes.
The localization of test kit manufacturing is part of China’s broader COVID-19 support agenda in Africa, which also includes large-scale donation of PPE to every African country and the establishment of factories in Egypt and Morocco to mass-produce a Chinese-made vaccine when it’s available.
