African Countries Are Going to Need Vaccines From China and Other Providers Since COVAX Supplies Will be Insufficient and Too Costly

New data from the Beijing-based consultancy Development Reimagined highlights how expensive it’s going to be to vaccinate a sufficient portion of the population in Africa to bring the COVID-19 pandemic under control. $5 billion is needed to cover the cost of two-dose vaccinations for just 20% of the population, according to Development Reimagined estimates.

Given that a number of African countries are facing acute financial strain due to mounting debt servicing costs, depreciating currencies, and higher social welfare expenses, it won’t be easy for most of these governments to come up with the billions needed to inoculate their people.
