South African President Cyril Ramaphosa personally went to Johannesburg OR Tambo International Airport late Monday night to witness the off-loading of 1 million COVID-19 AstraZeneca vaccines that arrived from the Serum Institute of India (SII).
While there’s no doubt relief that vaccines will finally be administered to South Africa’s health workers and eventually the public at large, President Ramaphosa is coming under intense criticism, including from the political editor at his own government broadcaster, for his apparent refusal to follow the same strategy as other African and developing countries to procure more vaccines from a wider array of sources, namely the Chinese and Russians.
